Simple Cooking Instructions – Classic Oven-Roasted Whole Chicken

  1. Thaw: Thaw your whole chicken completely in the refrigerator, allowing approximately 24 hours for every 4–5 pounds.
  2. Preheat: Heat oven to 375°F.
  3. Prepare: Remove any giblets from the cavity. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Do not rinse raw chicken.
  4. Season: Rub with olive oil or melted butter. Season generously with salt, pepper, garlic, rosemary, thyme, or your favorite herbs. Add onion, lemon, or garlic to the cavity for additional flavor.
  5. Roast: Place breast-side up in a roasting pan. Roast approximately 20 minutes per pound, using this only as a guide. Cook until the thickest part of the breast and innermost part of the thigh reach at least 165°F.
  6. Rest & Serve: Allow chicken to rest for 10–15 minutes before carving. Serve with roasted potatoes, garden vegetables, or your favorite homemade sides.

Farm Kitchen Tip: Don't throw away the bones! After enjoying your roasted chicken, save the carcass to make delicious homemade bone broth. Simply simmer the bones with onions, carrots, celery, and herbs for several hours. One whole chicken can provide multiple delicious meals for your family!
